THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME
A glimpse into the world beyond weddings – the everyday, the adventures, the real me.
You know, I often hear from folks that I look a lot like Bela B., that legendary drummer and singer from the German punk band Die Ärzte. And just for kicks, I’ve got a photo of the two of us side by side to show it’s not just talk!
I came into the world just one day after the king of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, passed away. (And before you say it – yes, I’m more of an Ian Curtis fan. His music just speaks to me on a different level.)
I’ve been sticking to a vegan lifestyle for almost twenty years now, but I’ve got to admit, spiders, wasps, and ticks still freak me out. Try as I might, I just can’t seem to get on board with them. But, if we’re not counting those critters, I’m a huge animal lover through and through.
I never really saw myself as a cat person until my (now) wife and her irresistible cat came into my life. It was instant love the moment I heard that purr, and before I knew it, my Instagram was flooded with cat photos. Now, I can’t picture life without our furry, sleepy-faced buddy. (I mean, who could resist that face?)
“When I got the music, I got a place to go.” (Rancid)
As a teen, I dreamed of playing drums, but my folks weren’t keen on the noise, so I ended up with an electric guitar instead. Soon, our basement turned into a buzzing rehearsal spot, alive with the sound of my band jamming away.
Music has been my constant since my late teens, playing in bands and touring Europe well into my 30s. It’s a huge part of who I am, even giving me comfort when I lost my dad. I found myself playing a gig just hours after getting the news, and somehow, the music helped me cope.
Riding my bike gives me this incredible sense of freedom, whether I’m zipping over Hamburg’s bridges or cruising down mountain roads. The uphill parts? Not so much my thing, but the rush of the downhill makes up for it.
Cycling is more than a pastime for me; it’s how I keep my feet on the ground and my mind clear. These days, you’ll often find me and my wife Jana on our gravel bikes, soaking up nature, focusing on our well-being, or diving into bikepacking adventures. It’s our little slice of peace and something we both treasure.
FOREVER REBEL SCUM
I was born in 1977, the year punk rock hit the scene and Star Wars first took us to a galaxy far, far away. With a backdrop like that, it’s no wonder I’ve got a bit of a rebel streak. That year wasn’t just about iconic releases; it played a big part in shaping the person I am today.
Traveling and experiencing different cultures has opened my eyes and influenced my outlook on life more than anything else. It’s the encounters and the shared moments with people from all walks of life that have truly enriched my perspective.

THE HAFENLIEBE STORY
SO FAR
Why ‘HAFENLIEBE’ [ˈhaːfənliːbə]?
It’s deeply rooted in the essence of Hamburg, where the port (‘Hafen’) symbolizes more than just a bustling hub; it’s the city’s heartbeat, echoing freedom and stories untold. For me, the port is about endless horizons, the thrill of setting sail into the unknown, and the warm embrace of coming home. It’s a canvas for the love stories I capture, each one a journey in its own right.
‘Liebe’ means love, and that’s the heart of my work – celebrating the beautiful tapestry of connections and moments that make each couple’s story unique. ‘HAFENLIEBE’ is a homage to love that’s as adventurous and boundless as the sea, embracing the winds of freedom and personal choice.
Choosing a German name, ‘HAFENLIEBE’, might raise eyebrows among an international audience, but it’s a conversation starter, an invitation to explore a narrative rich with personal meaning and the allure of the path less traveled. It reflects my deep passion for living life on my own terms, guided by my love for freedom and making choices that resonate with my soul.
And there’s a playful twist in ‘HAFENLIEBE’, steering clear of the clichéd ‘Hafen der Ehe’. It’s my way of reimagining tradition with a dash of rebellion, a meaningful nod to the unconventional, and a sprinkle of humor. This name is more than just a label; it’s a reflection of my journey, embracing freedom, personal choices, and a life crafted by my own hands.
Welcome to my walk down memory lane: Jump into the story of my life as a wedding photographer, where every year tells more than just big moments; it’s about the whole journey. You’re not just checking out how HAFENLIEBE grew; you’re diving into a tale where every little bit, every twist, has its own story.
From the early days to the latest adventures, this trip’s been packed with heart, creativity, and memories I’ll never forget. It’s a mix of wild rides, tough times, and big wins, showing how I’ve grown both in my work and as a person. So, come on in and explore the journey that’s molded the way I see things and the work I do.
THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN
–
Back to Big Bashes and Personal Bonds
2023 felt like a homecoming to the buzz of big weddings, a scene I hadn’t mingled with much in recent times. It all kicked off with a call from an old photographer buddy of mine, who’s now a dear friend. She was tying the knot and had her heart set on me capturing her day. How could I resist such a touching ask?
Her wedding was right up my alley – think vegan goodies, punk rock vibes, and a dash of defiance. It was a day buzzing with genuine vibes and the kind of spirited rebellion that I vibe with. Surprisingly, I found myself really getting into the swing of things with the bigger crowd, soaking up the lively vibes and loving the chance to catch all those rich, fleeting moments.
And there’s more on the horizon – they’re planning an even grander shindig for 2024, on Star Wars Day, no less! Can’t wait to see what that day has in store.
2023 also nudged me into somewhat uncharted territory for me – a family shoot. I usually steer clear of these, but I made an exception for some old clients who’ve become friends. It was a sweet reminder of the meaningful connections I’ve made through my lens and the joy of documenting my clients’ lives as they unfold.
This year really was about mixing the grandeur of big celebrations with the warmth of personal connections, highlighting the versatility and adaptability of my photography, whether it’s the cozy vibe of smaller gatherings or the dynamic energy of larger ones.
Epic Elopements and Memories for the Books
2022 was a standout year for me, filled with adventures and love stories that crossed borders. It was a year where I got to dive deep into what I love most – weaving tales of love and adventure. One elopement took us on an unforgettable week-long journey from Copenhagen’s cozy streets to the awe-inspiring landscapes of Iceland. It was more than just taking photos; it was about really getting into the heart of their story, making it one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had with a couple.
The adventures didn’t stop there. I found myself back among Venice’s dreamy canals and Tuscany’s postcard-perfect hills, capturing another elopement that spanned these incredible scenes. These moments underscored why I’m drawn to couples who turn their big days into epic adventures, celebrating their love against some of the world’s most stunning backdrops.
2022 truly celebrated the beauty of the path less taken in love stories. I was right there with couples, embarking on journeys that went way beyond the usual ‘I do’s, exploring new horizons together. Each elopement was a vivid reminder of what I love about my job – blending love stories with breathtaking adventures, creating memories that are as much about the journey as they are about the intimate moments we shared.
The Beginning of a New Chapter
Looking back at 2021, it felt like a chapter full of deep change and some serious soul-searching. In the middle of all that was going on in the world, I found myself drawn even closer to elopement photography. It wasn’t just about adapting to the times; it was about exploring those really intimate, heartfelt ways people express their love.
There’s something special about these smaller, more personal celebrations. They opened up a whole new level of storytelling for me, one that really hit home. Being there to catch those genuine, unguarded moments in such cozy settings turned out to be incredibly fulfilling and sparked a whole lot of creative energy in me.
As I made my way through the year, this deep dive into elopements fine-tuned the way I approach all weddings, big or small. It gave me a fresh perspective on the little details that make each couple’s love story their own. Now, looking back from the future, I can see how 2021 shaped my craft, blending the closeness of those small moments with the grandeur of bigger celebrations.
2021 taught me a lot about the resilience of love and the beauty of rolling with life’s punches. It strengthened my resolve to capture every couple’s story in its own unique light, from the quiet whispers of an elopement to the lively buzz of a big wedding bash.
Embracing Love Amidst Global Change
2020 was a whirlwind of a year, not just for the world, but for me personally. Amid all the chaos, Jana and I chose to elope – a decision we made looking for something intimate and just for us, long before we knew what the year had in store.
Jana was my rock throughout all of 2020’s twists and turns. She was so much more than a partner – she was my go-to person, my pillar of strength, the one who kept me grounded when everything else was up in the air. From figuring out how to adapt to everything changing around us, to keeping my head above water with my work, and dealing with all the personal ups and downs, she was there, every step of the way.
Our elopement in April was our little beacon of light. It was this beautifully personal moment we shared, right in the midst of all the global uncertainty. It wasn’t just about us saying our vows; it was a testament to how we could adapt and stay strong together.
Looking back, 2020 really drove home how crucial love, partnership, and finding joy even in tough times are. It was a year of learning and growing for me, both in my personal life and in my work, teaching me about the strength of resilience, the grace in simplicity, and the incredible power of sticking together through thick and thin.
Love Stories and Life’s Big Steps
2019 was a year that truly stood out, filled with unforgettable moments and big changes, both in my work and personal life. I got to capture love in some of the most beautiful places – like my first wedding shoot in Venice. The city was straight out of a dream, with its romantic vibes and stunning scenery making for an incredible setting.
Then, my journey took me to Mexico, a place I hadn’t been back to in nearly ten years. It wasn’t just about the work; being there reignited my passion for Central America’s rich culture and warmth, leaving a lasting impression on me.
But 2019 held even more meaning on a personal level. On my way to Mexico, I couldn’t stop thinking about Jana, my girlfriend. Surrounded by the beauty of Central America, I felt inspired to take a leap and propose. So, in December, during a New Year’s celebration in Denmark with Jana and our friends, I went for it – I asked her to marry me, and she said yes! That moment was the cherry on top of an already incredible year, merging my personal happiness with professional success in a way I’ll always cherish.
Spreading Love and Gaining Recognition
2018 was an amazing year that took me on adventures across Germany, Denmark, and Portugal, capturing love stories against some truly stunning backdrops. Each place brought its own unique vibe, giving me the chance to document a whole spectrum of genuine moments and deep connections.
This year also brought some pretty special moments of recognition my way. One of my shots made it onto Junebug’s ‘Best of the Best Engagement Photos’ list, and another got an honorable mention. Getting these nods was incredibly rewarding, a real nod to the love and effort I pour into every single photo.
I also dove deeper into sharing what I know, speaking and leading workshops in wedding photography. Exchanging stories and tips with other photographers just reinforced how much we can grow together, reminding me how important it is to keep learning and connecting with others in our field.
A Year to Remember: Awards, Teaching, and New Journeys
2017 kicked off with an unbelievable highlight – I was named one of the ‘Rising Stars of Wedding Photography’ by ‘Rangefinder’ magazine out of New York. It felt surreal, like a dream come true, especially when you think about the sheer number of incredibly talented photographers out there. That moment was one for deep gratitude and a bit of awe at how far I’d come.
This year also opened up a whole new chapter for me – stepping into the world of teaching. Sharing what I’ve learned and connecting with others became a huge part of my life. I found myself speaking at international workshops and events, like ‘Way Up North’, which was pretty special since I’d been there before, but as an attendee. I even started running my own workshops, which was both exciting and a big leap in my professional life.
On the photography front, 2017 was as busy and beautiful as ever, with weddings and elopements taking me from Portugal to England, and from Denmark to the sunny shores of Greece and Spain. Each place, with its own vibe and stories, added more chapters to the collection of love stories I’ve been lucky enough to capture.
The year also brought some changes – Jessy, who’d been by my side on many adventures, chose to follow a new path in her career. Her departure meant I was back to flying solo, facing the thrills and challenges of creativity on my own again.
A Year Full of Adventures and New Friends
2016 kicked off with an epic elopement in Australia that was just as heart-pounding as it was thrilling. That adventure really set the vibe for the whole year – one filled with incredible journeys and a lot of personal growth. I didn’t just come back with awesome photos; I brought home unforgettable memories, a meaningful tattoo, and a new skateboard, each a souvenir of the amazing time I had and a little promise to myself to go back someday.
As the year rolled on, I found myself in the heart of weddings and elopements in places like Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Italy, and Greece. Each spot had its own magic and stories to tell, adding so much richness to my work and the way I see the world.
But what really made 2016 special were the people – the amazing folks, the beautiful souls, and the inspiring stories I was lucky enough to cross paths with. Every couple and every celebration left its mark on me, shaping not just how I approach weddings but how I view life itself. It was a powerful reminder of just how incredible love is and the beauty of connecting with others.
Wrapping up the year at the Way Up North conference in Stockholm, I took a moment to reflect on all the growth, both in my career and personally. 2016 was a standout year in my journey as a wedding photographer, filled with varied experiences, meaningful connections, and lots of learning along the way.
Broadening Horizons and Continued Growth
2015 was a big year for me, stretching my wings further than ever before. I found myself capturing love stories in some pretty incredible places, from the peaceful beauty of Switzerland to the wild coasts of Ireland. But it wasn’t just about the international trips; back home in Germany, I was just as busy, diving into the unique tales of love that each local wedding had to tell.
That year, I also made my way to the Way Up North conference in Stockholm. It was more than just a learning experience; it reignited my passion and opened my eyes to new perspectives in wedding photography. It wasn’t just about picking up new tips; it was about connecting with other photographers, sharing stories, and getting inspired by the amazing community around me.
2015 really pushed me to embrace new challenges and places, helping me grow not just in how I see the world, but in how I capture the myriad forms of love set against all kinds of backdrops, from the familiar scenes of Germany to the excitement of exploring new lands.
A Year of Growth and Making Friends in the Field
2014 was all about diving deep into learning and making some amazing connections along the way. The Fearless Photographers conference in Amsterdam was a game-changer for me. It was there I crossed paths with Fer Juaristi, a photographer whose unique take on capturing weddings left a big mark on my own style. Meeting him was like seeing the world with new eyes, and it brought a fresh burst of inspiration and creativity into my work.
The learning didn’t stop there. I also got the chance to hang out and learn from Sean Flanigan in Madrid, which wasn’t just educational, but led to a great friendship too. These experiences were golden, helping me grow leaps and bounds as a photographer.
2014 had its share of special moments, like heading to Lisbon to take anniversary photos for some close friends. This personal project was close to my heart and really rewarding.
Another big moment for me was joining the Bildpoeten network. Being welcomed into a circle that included some of the photographers I admire most was a huge honor and a big nod to how far my work has come. Becoming part of this respected group was a significant milestone in my career, solidifying my dedication to being the best I can be in wedding photography.
A Year of New Adventures and Teamwork
2013 was full of new beginnings and exciting growth for me. I headed to Paris for the very first time to photograph an elopement, and it was as magical as it sounds. The charm and romance of Paris made it an absolutely dreamy setting for capturing such an intimate moment.
But 2013 wasn’t just about new places; it was also about new partnerships. My friend Jessy came on board, and together, we started tackling weddings as a team. Having Jessy by my side added a whole new layer to our work, allowing us to merge our talents and perspectives to tell richer, more vibrant wedding stories.
Another big milestone that year was officially naming my business ‘Hafenliebe’. It felt like everything was falling into place, giving my passion a name and a clear direction for all the exciting journeys that lay ahead.
Turning a New Page: From Exhaustion to Excitement
In May 2012, I decided it was time for a big change. I left my old job behind and dove headfirst into the world of photography, starting my own journey as a solo entrepreneur.
My first brush with wedding photography happened kind of by chance in 2011. It wasn’t something I’d ever pictured myself doing, but to my surprise, I found myself really drawn to it. There was something special about capturing those heartfelt moments that started to change my mind about the whole wedding photography gig.
So, when I switched to doing this full-time, weddings were definitely on my radar. That very summer, I got the chance to shoot a destination wedding in Tuscany, Italy. It was the perfect beginning to this new chapter, surrounded by stunning views and starting my adventure in capturing love stories.
